Direct Train service from Coimbatore to Pondicherry

Coimbatore to Puducherry train

Direct trains from Coimbatore to Puducherry and vice versa is good news to both Pondicherry and Coimbatore residents. Thanks to Southern Railway.

The dream of Coimbatore residents is going to be fulfilled before the month of October with the Railway announcing a direct train to Puducherry and also the Southern Railway deciding to reroute Mangalore-Puducherry Weekly Express via Coimbatore Junction.

The decision has come after the result of public pressure channelized through Coimbatore Railway Committee on the Union Railway ministry and Railway Board in the past two years. The overnight train is expected to allow Coimbatore residents to visit the old French town and at the same time will also help travelers access towns like Cuddalore and Villupuram without facing hardship.

Due to the congestion that was caused in the Coimbatore station and the route that forced the Railways to shift 13 major trains to the Podanur-Irugur route, the city residents were compelled to utilize the Podanur station, where no proper facilities were provided including affordable local transport. Several important trains that passed through Podanur never stopped at this small station, in due course rejecting Coimbatore entry to those long-distance trains.

Keeping in mind the public campaign and protests, railways rerouted the Thirunelveli-Bilaspur Express, Chennai-Trivandrum Express and Alapuzha-Chennai Express to the city.

“Coimbatore junction was considered to be the second largest income earner under Southern Railway. There is no particular reason for these trains to skip such an important city with countless passengers. Arriving Puducherry was also a difficult task and therefore it was decided that rerouting the train will solve that problem, which would connect both Puducherry and Cuddalore with Coimbatore city, declared P R. Natarajan, MP and chairman of Coimbatore Railway Struggle Committee.

According to the present schedule, the train would reach the destination at Coimbatore from Mangalore every Friday at 12:15 AM and reach Puducherry at 8:00 AM. It would then come back from Puducherry at 4:30 PM every Wednesday and reach Coimbatore junction late midnight. Not only will the tourists, even the people of Villupuram and Cuddalore also have less hardships from this proposal, said G K Nagaraj, convener of the committee.
